Default What grain 9mm do you use

    Hello everyone
I just purchased my first 9mm yesterday and I was wondering what weight bullet do most people use for target shooting and self defense carry purposes.

I am used to using 45 ammo, I know what weight is best in that catagory. I just purchased a box of Am Eagle 147 grain FMJ but did not get to shoot it yet. I don't know what is better , big and heavy like 147 or lighter and more snappy like the 115 or 124.
Just wanted to see what others use before I commit to buy a couple of cases.
    Thanks

I generally stick to 115gr and 125gr for 9mm. They cycle in my gun and are relatively cheaper.

If I have to throw a heavy slug at something, I have a 44spl, 44mag, 45acp and 45LC to do that for me..

Intersting stuff....I was watching the Military Channel on TV a week or two ago & they were talking about pistol calibers. Seems that the 9mm was DEVELOPED for the 124g bullet & the 115's & 147's were developed later on.

I find it hard to tell the difference between the 124 & the 115's or 147's at the range.

However, if you go from a 115 to a 147, you WILL notice a difference. The 147 will feel more like a .40 S&W.

I reload my own and have been using 124's. I like them & have been getting good results. I also reloaded a couple of 90g 9mm hollowpoints just for fun and those things are pussycats.

As far as carrying, my carry loads are the same that I do 95% of my range work with.....I'm not sure if that's valid or not, but I strive for consistancy as much as possible. I like to practice with 124's because that's what I carry.

115gr for standard practice ammo and 124gr +P for carry ammo.

I think I might go try to find a box of 124 's to compare the 147 's with and try to scheduel some range time this weekend if it doesn't rain.
I'd rather spend a little more money on one box of the infamous "high priced" local shop ammo, but alas I have no luck finding ammo at Wallyworld

115 FMJ for target practice and 124 JHP for carry. On a related note, 147gr is subsonic, so that's the best to use if shooting with a suppressor.

I prefer 124gr. It's what I first shot and it's what I'm used to. Also, since I carry 124gr +P, I prefer to practice with 124gr. At the end of the day, though, I'm happy to shoot whatever is available. 115, 124, and 147gr aren't all that different when it comes down to it.

I shoot 115, 124 and 147 FMJ for practice (whatever I can get for a good price), and carry 124 HST.
