I had an O Sh****t moment while cc this weekend when I walked into Franklin Institute

I googled the place and it didn't appear to be federal property or a national historic site.

well i guess i was wrong...








I walk through the front door and see a sign.

Benjamin Franklin "National Monument"

.....O sh***t.

Would someone Please! direct me to a listing or where I can find info on

Which buildings in Philadelphia contain National Sites or are owned by the Feds.

From the research I've done, not all national monuments are off limits to firearms. It depends on who runs the national monument.

I believe (hopefully somneone will correct me if I'm wrong) that if it's administered by the national park service it's off limits for firearms. If it's run by the US Forest Service of Bureau of Land Management it's not necessarily off limits.

I was at the Franklin Institute with my family a month or so ago. It's a private holding, so it's not under Federal control or subject to any Federal regulations. There are guards, but no pat-downs, metal detectors, bag searches, etc. You should be able to CC with confidence. I can't speak for OC as I'm not an OC'er myself, but based on my experience and understanding of the establishment it's no different than any other private property.

The only other building I have definite information on is the Mint, as I looked into it because my son was interested in visiting it. The Mint is a federal building, and there's no firearms allowed (emphasis by me):

Photography, smoking, eating and drinking are not allowed in the building. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, the following: any bag larger than 14" wide x 13" high x 4" deep, food and beverages of any kind, tobacco products, personal grooming items (make up, hair brush or comb, lip or hand lotions, etc.), umbrellas, strollers, any pointed objects (pens, knitting needles, etc.), aerosol containers, cameras, video recorders any type of recording device, guns, ammunition, fireworks, electric stun guns, mace, martial arts weapons/devices, or knives of any size. No packages of any type will be allowed; this includes large or small shopping bags, or recent purchases. All necessary medications will be identified and will remain in the custody of an adult chaperone for the entire tour. All visitors are required to enter through a metal detector.

What about places that have a sign outside saying it's in the national register historic places? Does that have any effect?

While Im far from an expert , I would be very surprised if any building just being on the National Historic Registry was a prohibitor . The National Historic Registry is really more for the purpose of identifying and designating buildings and or properties that have a particular and unique place in American History , for their architectural style , or their location , or a former famous owner , or a historical event took place there , etc . Its usually used to be able to get things like grants for rehab , up keep , holding tours , possible tax breaks and definetly to keep zoning code changes from forcing the alteration of the property in a negative way . It's mostly all about preserving and highlighting American History more then anything else.

That could be difficult to determine...many places listed under NRHP are still privately owned....

Obviously since there have been little to no definitive answers on this subject..

some research and digging is in order..

a case by case basis seems to be the only approach but info resources are often times incomplete and sometimes misleading (calling for info..)

for now i guess we all take our chances.
