Default Which 308 Rifle would you buy?

I will be Buck hunting for my first time this year and after many days of research online have concluded that I will be using a 308. Please don't reply with why didn't you go for the 30-30, the 30-06, the 300 wsm, or the 7mm-08, or the 243, or the 7mm mag......... I have spent days thinking about this already.

There are sooo many companies out there that make rifles it is hard to choose.

So far my top contender is a Savage model 10GXP3 under their package deals. Comes with the wood stock, adjustable trigger, and a scope and is already bore sighted. I also heard Savage Arms were one of the more accurate guns out there.

I also like the Remington VTR 84371 but am concerned because it has barrel porting. I like this idea for less kick but am not sure if it is wise when hunting. Don't want any debris in there. What do you think? The model 770 is also looking good and inexpensive.

I know everyone makes a cheaper rifle and I can always buy a scope later but I don't want to buy a $400 dollar gun and then realize i need a $150 dollar scope. I also know that I will see if they fit me and I would probably put on a rifle butt pad to keep the punishment low.

I also know there are probably used rifles out there but I don't know enough about buying used guns to know what to look for. I do know the 270 barrel tends to wear out faster than most but I am not sure if that goes for others as well.

What do all of you think??

I have a Savage in .243, 2 friends have Savages in .223 and .308 also.

I have fired them all, my .243 is more accurate than I am Good rifles right out of the box. I did shitcan the cheapo simmons scope that came with mine and put on a Nikon though.

As far as other .308 offerings I also have a Ruger 77, no complaints with it either.

I like the fit and feel of the Savage, accu-trigger is a plus....the price is good.

.308 is an excellent choice of caliber and you can't go wrong with a Savage. They are well made, affordable and very accurate. Shooters in general have a very good opinion of Savage rifles, judging from the posts on the various gun forums that I frequent. I cant recall hearing anything bad said about the Accu-Trigger.

Are you dead set on a wooden stock? I personally love the look of blued steel and walnut over anything else, but the syn stock and stainless, the 16FXP3, might be a more practical choice if you'll be hunting out in bad weather. Just something to consider.

I like the look of the walnut over all so far but one other reason for the wood stock and blue barrel are that the weight is 3/4 pound heavier. Total weight is 7.25 lb vs 6.5 for the synthetic stock and blue or stainless barrel.

If they had a stainless barrel and wood stock I might consider that instead.

I do like the Model 11 BTH (Short Action) Savage with the thumbhole stock. Really sharp looking. Just not sure how the thumbhole helps?

I have several .308 bolt guns.
I use the FN Patrol Bolt Rifle PBR XP 308 Win. 24" barrel or Ruger M77 MkII VT .308 with a 26" barrel. Both are topped with Leupold 6.5-20x40 and all my shots are 250yds to 675yds. I usually use hand loads with either Sierra 150g HPBT Match or Sierra GameKing 165g HPBT.

I own both Savage and Remington bolt rifles, both are great, both you can adjust the trigger. Remington just doesn't advertise that fact and it takes a little research. Another great Remington deer rifle is the 760 or 7600 pump. Just as accurate as a bolt and they really point like a shotgun. The pump does not rattle like everybody says and they are super accurate, mine is more accurate than my 7 mag bolt. I've never had a feed problem other than the time I took it shooting in the New Mexico desert, they don't like sand. Super quick follow up shots (even though everyone here only uses the one shot one kill method of hunting, if you don't believe me just ask and you'll get a four page rant about it).

Would you be interested in a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308? I purchased one about 8 months ago, and used it during hunting season. Can't say enough about accuracy, especially if you reload for it. I decided to try this 700 upon reading the review at http://www.snipercentral.com/spstactical.htm. Now they do tell you in the review that if you add a bipod, the stock will touch the barrel ever so slightly. I can assure you it is an easy fix. If you or anyone is interested in a fix for this shoot me a PM.

I purchased mine from budsgunshop.com and I had it in my hands a week later. I like the .308 version so much that I'm thinking of getting one in .223 now.

I use a Savage Model 99 for deer hunting and I love that rifle. Like others have said, it is far more accurate than I am. You can't go wrong with a savage.
