Default Whats a good color for a Mosin Nagant?

I am in the process of refinishing 2 mosin nagants that are in well need of a good touch up. Does anyone know some of the original wood colors that the Mosin's use to have? Or a good color that I could refinish them with? Thank you!

I feel that if it's russian it should be a deep RED stain.

    Are they laminated?

When I redid mine, I just used a Minwax "Tung Oil Finish". Came out nice.

they are laminated and look like they have had some dark paint on the stock. I have to strip the stock and start fresh. I was looking for a light stain something stronger then the blonde stock but in the same ball park.

I just looked up the tung oil finish and thats the color I was looking for. Do I strip the stock totally before starting and what do you reccomend? Paint thinner or sanding or what?

very nice! What colors did you use and what type of staining or finish did you use? Also, did you use polyurethane or not to seal it? If not what did you use to seal it?

I totally stripped it, down to fresh wood.

    I used this to strip - http://www.minwax.com/products/speci...efinisher.html

Along with some 0000 steel wool and some green scrubby pads.

Then for finishing, used this - http://www.minwax.com/products/speci...il_finish.html

It came out nice, no glossy sheen.

I'll see if I can snap some pics.

    (Warning, this will sound creepy)

I cut myself splitting wood once and noticed that it wade a very interesting color on the fresh hardwood. I'm not sure how it would work in large scale but it would be a great conversation starter.

You: "Like that rifle stock? Stained it with blood"

Random dude: "WTF man! That's really dusgusting but the color is beautiful!"

You: "Yeah, hardest part was getting the blood. My wife was a bit dizzy for a while but she got over it. And if she complains about mosquitoes biting her when she sleeps just run with it okay?"

On a serious note, would a blood bank turn over a unit or 2 of almost out of date blood if you asked? I guess you would have to pay for it. Maybe insurance would cover it. Or you might have to draw it yourself. Find a nurse and pay her a few bucks to draw it for you. Keep some cookies and juice handy in case you get light headed, Then just brush it on the stripped wood until you get the color you want. Or to really be cool drip it on from the top so you get a cool pattern. Anyways, you get the point.

Wow, that was a messed up post. I'm on painkillers for a hurt left hip and just watched Underworld 2.

Edit: It would be much easier (but not nearly as cool) to use animal blood. Call a butcher, they usually have pig or cow blood around for making black sausage and other dishes.

great info. Do I soak the stock in the furniture refinisher or apply it with a paint brush and steel wool it off? Everyone is talking about tung oil finish so that is probably the way I am going.
