    Default ak selection

I've got a couple of gun safes that are nearly full but have never ventured into the ak-47 world. If you were going to start from scratch and build a system what would you buy inclusive of optics/sights. I'd like to keep the whold project under 1200.

Not sure what you mean by "system". I'm a believer that for the most part, there isn't much that needs to be done to an AK.

If your looking for suggestions on which AKs to buy, here are some of my favorites:

    Yugo: M70 and M92
    Polish Underfolders
    Chi-coms
    Hungarians

There are a ton of nice ones out there ... it's all personal preference. What are you looking for?

My near vision is poor as of age 47, and I will need some type of optics. This will be a defense weapon...I have a number of long range solutions from .243 to 300 win mag.

I'm just looking for the best of the ak-47 production rifles in terms of reliability and quality of construction. I really don't need moa accuracy out of the weapon, but a four inch group at 100 would be nice.

I would go with an underfolder, in plain old 7.62X39.

I am more of a traditionalist when it comes to AKs and never though much for decking one out with all kinds of do-dads. Most of the sighting systems seem out of place on them and those quad rail forearms seem the same way to me.

An AR is the platform for decking out.

Well ... you are talking about AKs. 99% of them will be very reliable, no matter which one you get. Yugos are going to be the best bang for your buck. Very quality rifles ... they used to be reasonably priced, but have since increased in price with all the buying that has been going on.

As far as optics....what about an Ultimak gas tube/rail that replaces the stock gas tube? Throw a red dot sight on there and you'd get your optic without messing around with anything too technical on the gun

Yugo ,Arsenal or anything built by the more popular builders such as inrange, akusa, krebs are all good to go. Per shot show news arsenal is coming out with some nifty new guns this year..
