old 45 sub mach (grease gun)

A friend of mine. Grandfather pastaway and left a wwII 45 sub mach full auto machinegun he brought back fom the war .He wants to try to sell it .does he have to put it in his name before he sells it or not .I dont think it registered at all he has no idea if it was or not .

there are two choices here.
pursue the path of right and get the atf involved.
if it is an illegal smg, the gun will be destoryed, at best made into a parts kit(with no use as there are no approved ways to make it a semi). fines could possibly be leveled, and i'm sure they would be large.

of course if hings ar on the up and up he could sell it, but there's alarge risk of big misfurtune involved.

personally i see the possible destruction of it as a bad thing, even if that would be the law abidding thing.
