My wife works in the district. Rumor is that they were left by some student who wanted to leave early. Since they've identified the student I'd say he got to leave early LOL

Better to be safe than to ignore it OP. So many shootings these days...no reason not to dismiss even if you don't think it's a big deal.

Mt Lebanon High School has a range and a rifle team. The team is very meticulous about policing their brass because if a single casing leaks out into the hallway and is found by a staff member, the school gets locked down and the po-po are called.

Chances are its some kid who wants the day off. Like pulling a fire alarm. But the issue is if ignored and this was some kind who brought in even a 22 to actually use suddenly nobody would be joking about how innocent the whole thing was.

My guess is that he didn't want to take his chemistry final.

I've seen worse reasons to shut school down.
Most likely a joke or prank, but in today's atmosphere, the school officials can't really ignore it.

Are there really "so many shootings " or is it just that each one makes national news for months?

When you have a population of three hundred million, forty-five deaths is really nothing. If forty-five people were killed because someone threw a toaster into the victims' bathtub, no one would care. Fifty people can die in a traffic accident but there won't be an outcry for safer cars. BUT because it is GUNS and CHILDREN, it is the horror of the century and has created a new way for the government to waste tax money.

I don't follow stats...what I feel is that there are too many shootings that occur at schools in general. School shootings do not end well for the people in the schools.

I'm more concerned these days about anything dealing with schools since I have a 7 year old daughter that attends a charter school. I'd rather have a school be pro active than to be reactive.

So you make your decisions based on emotions rather than facts? Do you let your daughter go to the mall? On a school bus? Public transportation? Airplanes? Does she drink water or soda out of plastic bottles? Does she eat Freedom Fries?

BTW, what does your daughter's school being a "charter school" have to do with this discussion?
