Arrow How Much Safer Can a Garand Be?

I perused an auction listing at Alderfer's Auctioneers & Appraisers today (the auction is on Tues, April 19, 2016) and a particular listing for item # 355 caught my attention:

"#355 Springfield Armory M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle. - Cal. 30-06. 24" bbl SN 1838070. 60% parkerized finish on metal, barrel is blocked by welding rod, spot weld on charging handle slot which does not allow bolt to stay back, small weld over firing pin hole, missing portions of rear sight, walnut stock is mismatched and shows deep handling marks, no visible cartouches. Missing entire trigger assembly. The receiver is not cut in any fashion."

I'm pretty sure some of you like projects, so this could take you through, say, the next SEVEN polar vortexes - if you had a basement full of Bridgeports, etc.

The modifications don't make sense for a parade rifle, but maybe with the welding rod blocking the barrel, some dad just wanted to be sure that if it was carried to a school that permitted "Show & Tell", it wouldn't become a pea shooter later in the day?

This one has me flummoxed, for sure...

What's going on with it? (HOW MUCH IS IT WORTH? APPARENTLY THERE ARE NO MAGAZINES INCLUDED. WILL IT GET ME A GOLD MEDAL AT CAMP PERRY? WOULD THIS BE SAFE IF I WAS DRIVING TO NYC THROUGH NJ AND LEFT IT ON MY BACK SEAT AS I PAID THE TUNNEL TOLL? ETC...):

I don't know but I'm sure a 10 lb rifle still makes for a wonderful blunt weapon so it's still not all that safe.

All M-1s include one magazine, you really can't get around that.

How many times do we have to say it? It's not a magazine, it's a CLIP!

That's funny. One of the few rifles I've owned that actually had a "clip", AND a magazine.

I think the clips go in the magazine.

Seems more appropriate to advertise this as scrap metal and firewood. Some disassembly required.

Are you going to bid on it or what?...
