Draw from OC vs CC
In another thread, someone had said something about bad guys being able to blow away a good guy because of how much longer it takes to draw from concealment.
At the range today, I thought we'd take some videos to see of there was a real difference. Simple drill, draw and fire one as fast as I could get a hit at 10 yards. I'm hardly Quick Draw Mcgraw, so perhaps some first person examples of the difference in speed of what an average Joe (so to speak ) can do may be illustrative.

Re: Draw from OC vs CC
Well, I did find the under the tshirt video in your collection.
I can only think this, every second counts.
Anyway, even in a CCW course, they'll usually mention how the hammer can get caught on clothes. If someone did get it caught on clothes and the person really needed that gun out in 1.5 seconds(general CCW draw) and get it caught on clothes, they're dead.

Re: Draw from OC vs CC
While I feel that the difference is probably negligible, you also need to factor in that you are expecting someone to say "go" and then you are drawing. In a situation where you need to draw, there will be other factors, such as tension, adrenaline, fear. Thes will also effect your motor functions. I don't mean that these factors will keep you from flinging your shirt back, but they may cause you to reach for an exposed gun, only to find a shirt in the way. Which is why it is important to practice as you carry. I am guilty of this as well. I don't always wear a cover garment when I go to the range, yet I CC 90% of the time.
I often wonder what the guys I see at the range wearing the thigh rigs will do on the street. Probably reach for their leg instead of their gun.Adams County Sport Handgunners Association - President

Good thread. I think you need to have a video of drawing from CC from under a shirt, not just from behind an open hanging shirt, to get a true idea of the difference.

Re: Draw from OC vs CC
IMO, most any time you might need to draw your gun...there will be some pre-fight cues which will already get your mind started down the path of "if he does this, I'm going for my gun". In that process, I'm willing to bet how you access what weapon, goes through your mind. Whether you have to clear or rip a cover garment doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.
If you're wearing something you have to clear (like an open vest) then you're conscious of not letting it swing back inadvertently on you, exposing your weapon...well before you have any thoughts of accessing that weapon in a fight. If you're wearing a garment which you have to rip (like a sweater or zipped up jacket) then your concealment habits are different, and your mind should be already geared towards that.
Personally I wouldn't open carry with an open-top holster either....so if you figure that into play...the time difference gets even closer for most people.
Now, here's where the open carry nazis show up and shout about how great OC is.....just like every other thread on this site about carrying a gun.

One of them posted above you... no other comment than to say I thought there should be a video that showed having to draw from under a shirt. The Nazi thing is only going to be a self fulfilling prophecy......

Even though every fraction of a second counts, in 99.99999999% of scenarios it probably won't matter.
If you're radar was down you're already WAY behind the curve and a lightning fast presentation probably won't enable you to catch up.

That kind of talk.....on both sides.......just divides all of us further.
Back on topic:
I think some people have trouble breaking out of a practice routine and others generalize much easier based on several factors. Some find that changing a draw routine can adversely effect their overall performance, while others seem to use the variety of movement hone overall gun handling skills and efficiency.
Practice presentations from all possible scenarios. You can always learn something personal from that.
You have to see what works for you and what pros and cons you are willing to accept.
