OC Newbie

I have gained tremendous knowledge in a short time from this forum. You guys have been great. I have had a LTCF for years, but had no idea OC was legal. And I want to OC, badly. I just keep getting this feeling that it is some kind of forbidden fruit. What is the worst case scenario when I take the first step? From all the threads I've read, even experienced OC people seem to do so with some trepidation. Thanks, guys.

The police, the managers at Wal-Mart and the soccer moms are not really a big concern - there are others that can take a more sinister bent.

First, before you OC, get yourself a GOOD retention holster.

Second, at least read up on, if not actually get training in, weapon retention and recovery.

Third, know your rights, know the law, but be ready to make concessions - such as covering at the request of a store manager should you not want to just leave.

Just remember - you aren't doing anything wrong by OCing, but some people won't see it that way.

As for what you might be charged with - the common thing is Disorderly Conduct - however it has already been upheld in court that it isn't a valid charge - again, know the law and applicable case law.

And finally, carry yourself in a non-threatening, yet confidant manner. Dress nicely. Appearance has a lot to do with how your OC will be received.

Lildobe's reply is very good, IMO.

OC brings most of the same concerns as CC plus, as mentioned, retention becomes more important.

If you can afford training, get it. Obviously this is wise CC or OC. If not, start saving. I doubt you regret the investment.

Always be "extra" polite and extra alert. Situational awareness goes hand in hand with retention, plus the obvious benefits of avoidance.


As far as dealing with police, again, know the law. Not so you can argue with the police but so you know when your not in the wrong. Above all, never resist if encountering the police. It's fine to not consent if an LEO think you should do domething your not obligated to such as "cover up" or produce your LTCF when it is not required, but never resist.

Above all, if your not comfortable doing it, don't I know, seems simplistic, but really it's very important to be comfortable.

Choose your method of carry wisely. Don't carry a particular way just because you can. The phrase "just do it", was intended for Nike sneakers and not for firearms.

Be responsible. Use discretion. Know your situation and where you're going. Be ready for any eventuality when your carrying, whether it be O/C or C/C.

Aside from thekatar being the harbinger of doom, you are unlikely to run into any negative responses. Wearing your weapon openly is as legal as walking around without one. Have a flyer with you in case you need to reference it, but other than that you are good to go. Getting hasseled by the police is always a possibility, but so is getting hit by a car while walking across the street. Be aware of your surroundings, think before you act, and enjoy your freedom
