Default How do I get a pistol to NY for an IPSC match

I have a question on how I can get my competition pistol to an IPSC match on Long Island, NY. The problem is the route I will be travelling to get there.
I will be driving to Toronoto Canada first and then driving from there to New York. Then driving back to PA.

Since I am going out of the country first, I assume I can't bring my firearm with me. Can I ship the pistol to myself at the NY address I will be staying at? If so, can I just use Fedex/UPS?

Is anyone familiar with NY laws about me having my pistol for a pistol match in Long Island? What trouble could I get into if I were stopped and had it in my car?

Not that it matters in NY, but I do have my PA LTCF.

    Thanks,
    Ed

Check with your local FFL. I'm not sure, but I think shipping a handgun has to be done FFL to FFL.

You can always post a question on Enos' forums - brianenos.com . That's a pretty much all things IPSC site, and I'm sure someone can guide you in the right direction.

Of course, you realize you're heading into Communist territory and will probably need your passport....

IIRC, while in N.Y., you should have the match info along with your itinerary on you in your vehicle. The weapon(s) should be locked up separate from the locked up ammo. There is a thread somewhere in here........ I think maybe the coast guard guys thread....... As for Canada....good luck, I would think shipping would be your best bet...

    Hey Ed,

You are kind of screwed. You can't take the gun with you to Canada, and you cannot ship a handgun to yourself or to anybody else that doesn't hold an FFL. You can ship from dealer to dealer, but the FFL has to "book" the firearm to transfer it to another party. You cannot legally transfer a firearm to yourself in NY as you are not a resident.

Interstate travel is legal, travel in NY state is legal to/from an NRA sanctioned match (all approved IPSC matches are NRA sanctioned for this specific reason), but your plan for the Canada side-trip is going to screw you up.

As a former LI resident, let me also warn you that NYC is a socialist nightmare. The city requires you to notify the commisionner of police in order to transfer a firearm through NYC (you can't get to LI without driving through NYC, unless you reroute to Connecticut and take a ferry!). I'm not sure the Federal statute wouldn't protect you in transit, but a night in jail would suck either way. One of the reasons I am a FORMER LI resident, I assure you ;->

I have friends at a couple of clubs on the island that I'd love to visit once in a while, but I'm not taking the chance traversing the no-freedom zone.

    FWIW,
    Rob

You need to consult with an attorney who is familiar with the law in New York State, and New York City, but my advice would be there's no competition on Long Island that's worth the risk of getting in trouble to attend.

I'm pretty sure the FFL option won't work, because you can't legally get the firearm transferred back to you're not a resident of New York. I believe you actually can ship a firearm to yourself in another location through use of a common carrier other than US mail, but I wouldn't be willing to do that myself (check with an attorney before you do it. NYS and NYC gun laws are a mine field)

Find s shop in Buffalo and see if they will hold your gun and range bag for you while you are in Canada. Pick it back up when you come back into the US.

If you aren't going directly to a sanctioned competition, you can't legally have a handgun in New York State. It's unlawful to have an unlicensed handgun under any other condition, and non-residents can't get a license.
