Legal barrel for hunting
Hope that I'm on the right forum, here. Apologies if i'm not. Isn't 16" the minimum legal barrel length for a hunting rifle in Pa? I looked all through the Pa. Game Commission laws, etc and couldn't locate what I needed. Thanks for the info, Wildwince.

Re: Legal barrel for hunting
I am not sure there is a minimum barrel length for hunting in PA. I have hunted with a Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Magnum revolver with a 7.5" barrel. I have a buddy who hunts with us that uses a Remington XP-100 chambered in 7mm-08 with a 14.5" barrel.

Re: Legal barrel for hunting
Thanks for the feedback knight0334,red, and steveinpa. I know about the pistol barrel lengths but wasn't sure about rifle barrel lengths. I've taken several deer with my .357 and .44 mag. A buddy of mine told me that a rifle had to have a barrel length of at least 16". There is no paperwork involved if that makes a difference. I know of people who have hunted with .357 and .44 mag 16" barrels on lever action carbines (trapper models) but I just wanted to be sure. My rifle has a barrel length of 16.5" and an overall length of 38.5" so I ought to be okay then. Thanks again, Wildwince.

Re: Legal barrel for hunting
The 16" rule is a federal law for rifles in general. A rifle with a barrel shorter than 16" is a "short-barrel rifle" (SBR) and is regulated (taxed) per the NFA. The paperwork mentioned is a stamp that must accompany such a firearm, verifying that you have payed your tax. NON of any of this has any effect on hunting.
