Default CC Problem, Mind Over Matter?

I've been CC for about 5yrs now. I carry a full size XD.45 in an HBE leather works holster %98 of the time. My PROBLEM is I'm still not comfortable with having a round in the chamber. When i carry my snubby or my DA pistols im fine with one in the chamber. I guess fear is a problem, you know the "what if" factor but that also has me concerned with.... what if I need to use it now. The racking of the slide may be impossible or take away presious seconds that I may not have. I've handled firearms my whole life, but how can I get past that problem? Or will I ever overcome that? Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Jason

What exactly is it that you're worried about? AD? ND?

Put a snap cap in it and beat it up, drop it, bang it.... when it doesn't fire the cap, you'll see you have nothing to worry about. Or, continue to be neurotic....

I have never carried an empty chamber in over 20 years of CC and the last 5 months of OC. I do not want this to become a fight over what "Condition" to carry.

My simple explanation as to why I am comfortable is: I know my pistols all have internal safety mechanisms which all but eliminate the chance of an AD if my finger is not actively trying to squeeze the trigger. AND I do not want to risk pulling the trigger in an adrenaline filled moment on an empty chamber. Click, I am dead.

I also do not have external safety(s) on my carry guns. I only want to have to remember - Aim and pull the trigger.

Yea I know, I guess the fact that when I take my guns to go shooting those around me may not be as careful as I. "ohh cool *boom*", and I dont want myself to blame. Then again just thinking about it, it is my gun I am the one to use it I am fine with it being loaded but others around I dont trust. Being that it is my carry gun that wont be a problem because im not out to show it off. I guess now my problem will be with getting the wife to understand this isn't a toy and dont touch it, she still isnt comfortable with guns around and theres alot to go around. She I guess "fondles" them in an unsafe manner and I'm trying to work on that and teach her the saftey and responsibility of handling them. Now she is the one I have to watch out for and that may be the reason for keeping one out of the chamber, shes never been around them and we just bought our first house in june so Im gonna have to take my time. She'll have to get used to seeing them and touching them on a day to day basis. Any clue on how to get her comfortable with them as well?

Teach her that they are power tools. They are not toys (well, to some of us they are ), and must be handled with care and respect at all times.
Any mission, any conditions, any foe at any range.
Twice the mayhem, triple the force.
Ten times the action, total hardcore.

Others have good advice, but here is my input.

You've been carrying with 1 in the chamber for 5 years.
The proof is in the puddin' as they say.
That XD will never go off unless you make it go off by pulling the trigger.

Continue safe handgun handling procedure and never get lazy with it, and you'll be just fine.

After that long probably only professional training will help.

Something you should invest in anyway, imo.
