Question of the day- Why do people ask,"Is that a real gun?"
I have had three different people ask me this question over the last six months. It has been nagging at the back of my brain, what is the thought process behind asking that? They obviously know nobody walks around with a fake gun on their hip. So is it some kind of auto-response like, "I know that's real, but if I ask if it is, maybe it will not be, and then I can go on with my day as if all is right in the world."?
Any thoughts?

Say nope, then go about your business. Stupid questions require stupid answers IMO.

That's how I feel when someone asks me if i'm a cop. I get that alot. People sure react funny to something that has been our right for over two hundred years.

Re: Question of the day- Why do people ask,"Is that a real gun?"
I think that they are looking for some way to make contact with you, even if it's with an inane and silly question, as to determine whether or not you are a threat to their well-being. That's simply the first easy, even if stupid, question that pops into their head to ask you. Nothing else is grounds for an approach (ie, ask "what do you do for a living, where you're going, etc), but the unusual fact that you're carrying a gun is a place for them to break the silence.

Regardless of why a person asks such a questions, it's up to you to provide an answer that can't shine badly upon other responsible gun owners.

It is one of those things that people find very difficult to comprehend...even though they see it with their own eyes, they need someone else to verify that it is in fact, what they have just seen.
Thats where you get stupid questions like "is that real?" "what are you doing?" when it is very clear what you are doing, and "what do you mean?" when you said something like 'I am going to rent a movie'. It is also something for people to buy time while their brains process what they already know...And don't think you're off the hook, voters, you're the ones who made this bed. Now you're the ones who are going to have to move over so a gay couple can sleep in it. Tomorrow you're all going to wake up in a brave new world, a world where the Constitution gets trampled by an army of terrorist clones, created in a stem-cell research lab run by homosexual doctors who sterilize their instruments over burning American flags. -- Stephen Colbert

One of my GF's friend was over the other day and asked me the same question. I looked at her with the "are you for real" look. It took me a minute to find out she was being serious... and i just replied yes it is.

If it's less than a .45 caliber, then the correct answer is "no".
