Default PA law on transporting ammo with a gun.

I always keep my ammo in a 50cal ammo can when i'm transporting it to/from shooting. But i was wondering exactly how PA looks at it? Of course you cant transport a loaded long gun in a car, but what about a loaded mag in the case next to the rife? Not something i do, but i was curious...

Firearm and ammo cannot be in the same container (being able to actually touch each other) unless you have a LTCF.

A LTCF does not cover long guns, so the rifle and ammo must be carried seperate. If you have a rifle case with multiple compartments, like the kind commonly used for AR rifles, you can have the mags in the pouches and the rifle in the case.

    From 6102:

"Loaded." A firearm is loaded if the firing chamber, the nondetachable magazine or in the case of a revolver, any of the chambers of the cylinder contain ammunition capable of being fired. In the case of a firearm which utilizes a detachable magazine, the term shall mean a magazine suitable for use in said firearm which magazine contains such ammunition and has been inserted in the firearm or is in the same container or, where the container has multiple compartments, the same compartment thereof as the firearm.
If you have a LTCF, you have no problem carrying or having a loaded firearm in the vehicle. In the case of a long gun, as you can see in the definition of loaded, you can have the ammo in the same case, if it has separate compartments. If the container the gun is in does not have separate compartments, then the ammo can not be in the same container.

Thats what i thought, thanks! Anyone recommend a good AR case that has spots on the outside for loaded mags?

    Read the statute again.

Only true for loaded magazines and the gun that accepts them.

If the gun does not take a magazine, or the magazines are not loaded, the ammo can be in the same compartment/bag/etc. Just not in the chamber/cylinder or fixed magazine.
