Whatcha reading? - Book thread
Since we've got some pretty diverse tastes here at PAFOA, I thought it might be kinda cool to compare notes about different books that we're currently reading (or ones that really made a difference in our lives, made us think, made us laught 'til we pee, etc.)
I'll start. I picked up a book called Prisoners of the Mahdi by Byron Farwell. I got it at Carroll and Carroll Booksellers in Stroudsburg, great place by the way, not to plug them too hard.
All I can say is, for a book written in 1967 that is essentially historical non-fiction, it is one of the coolest, most entertaining books I've ever read.
Brief synopsis. The Sudan in mid-late 1800s. Poor muslim named Mohammed Ahmed rises to power as the Mahdi (successor to the muslim prophet Mohammed) and proceeds to stomp a mudhold in the backside of the British and Egyptians. That's as far as I got so far. Don't want to spoil the ending for everyone!
Too bad Farwell wasn't my high school history teacher. I might have paid better attention.Sed ego sum homo indomitus

Re: Whatcha reading? - Book thread
Presently reading Where Wizards Stay Up Late: The Origins Of The Internet , by Katie Hafner. Also, in the On Deck Circle, we have, in no particular order:
Liberal Facism, by Jonah Goldberg. I've started this three times and never completed, unfortunately.
Walden, by Henry David Thoreau
Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand
There may be something else on the list that I don't remember, too.
