I don't handle the anesthesia well, so after my last surgery I spent three days in bed not able to really move. So I didn't really have a need to carry.

    Dear Unknown,

I guess this is something you need to weigh the risk vs. benefit of.

If you had a common Inguinal Herniorrhaphy, the surgeon may have used mesh, a plug or other absorbable or non-absorbable material to strengthen the repair after he reduced it.. These can often be uncomfortable for quite a while as alot of soft tissue retraction and muscle pulling is required for exposure.

Undo stress on the suture lines can make matters worse and increase your chance for recurrance. Hernia repairs often have alot of tension on the surronding tissue by the nature of what is be being pulled and approximated to close the defect.

I would personally just lay low and let your body heal.. as a general rule of thumb for soft tissue procedures a "1% per day" thought process is good advice.
If you think about your healing as progressing 1% per day and gauge your activities with that mindset .. Most folks do fine..

( This can be longer or shorter based on your overall health and nutrition.. IE- If you are a diabetic.. Healing takes longer, If you are a 25 year old physically fit individual .. It may be quicker)

Other types of hernias ( Like Incisional or Epigastric or if it was incarcerated) , have different heal and complication rates, But I do not know exactly what you had performed..

I always advise on the side of caution, and take into consideration the consequence of trying to do too much too fast post-operatively..

I hope this advice helps, and feel free to shoot me a PM if you need more clarification.. I will offer what wisdom I can to assit you in the quickest recovery possible..

    Peace and God Bless ,
    Vin

Thanks everyone, I hope all the surgeries are going well.

I had an umbilical hernia. Rather small that they said they didn't use mesh. just permanent stitches.

I have to go back today, because I think it's infected .

    Blah.

Other then that, its back to normal.

Just before last Thanksgiving I broke my leg and ended up in the emergency room, with gun. Wife saw the 'no gun' sign and freaked out until I gave it to her to hold onto until I got out of the hospital. I didn't have the gun for the ride home but wore it the next and every time since.

A few at work commented on this exact thing and I said that being white and old I couldn't run very fast before the broken leg. Now with a broken leg and crutches I had no choice but to stand my ground.

Luckily it hasn't come to that.

I got Home on the 2nd and just now getting around to feeling good enough to carry,I'd say it depends on the person, surgery, and rehab as to when to start carrying,,,,,,also the pain meds need to be at a reasonable level.
