Yet another traffic stop. But a good one... Almost

I'm about 2 miles from home after traveling almost 200 miles round trip to compete in the Lewistown IDPA match. I'm pretty well zoned out and never see the cop sitting at the only place that they always run radar in my area.

He finally catches up and I pull over. My KAHR CW9 is laying on the seat beside me. My back had been hurting so I decided to remove it from my holster and just let it lay there for the long ride home.

I watch as he gets out of the cruiser. He heads up to my window. I put my hands together on top of the steering wheel and wait. He stops and ask for the usual paperwork. I look at him, and motion over to the other seat with my head keeping both hands in plain view. "Just so your aware, I have my pistol laying on the seat beside me". He looks over at it, then looks at me and says............ Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it.

I end up getting a ticket for $109. (Someone else on another thread got a ticket for that same amount. Must be in the wind)

But before we leave he starts asking questions.
LEO: "What you carrying there?"
ME: It is a KAHR CW9.
LEO: "We carry the Rugers in 40 Caliber. That is a nice thin looking pistol."
ME: Yeah, I really like how light and thin it is. It rides on my hip very comfortably.
LEO: "I prefer the 40 for the stopping power".
ME: Ah, anymore with the great ammo out there. I personally don't think the difference is that big. Now, I know the Nine is cheaper to shoot. In fact I'm coming from a IDPA shoot and have my XD in the bag in the back seat."
LEO: I would love to try that. I'm also thinking about either getting myself an XD, an M&P or a Glock. This Ruger is just to darn heavy."
ME: I invite him to the next USPSA and IDPA shoot in Holidaysburg.


All in all the conversation was nice. He did give me a ticket, but didn't zing me for the points. As he was leaving, He once more thanked me for letting him know about the pistol.

Now that's how a traffic stop should go. I'd call the PD and thank them for being so professional. Great story.

Um, shame on your for leaving the XD in the bag! That's probably why you got the ticket.

Good encounter. I wouldn't think otherwise with you. You're a pretty personable guy, so no reason for the LEO to get uppity.

The $109 citation is probably for “failure to obey a traffic control device”. This citation invokes no points on your license, unlike an actual citation for speeding. It may also be cheaper than a citation for speeding.

There is certainly no harm in letting the officer know you are carrying, especially when it is right out in the open!

I would have only given you a warning after finding out you were a gun toter.

Since he kind of "bonded" with you, you think he would have just given you a warning, but at least he did you a break on the points... so that's something good
