    Default .22 rifle/pistol/SBR questions

Okay, after seeing the Ruger Charger and deciding it HAS to be my next pistol I had a few questions.

The thing is just a 10/22 with 10" barrel and a nice grip. From what I have seen the velocity and accuracy is almost as good as the full size models. But then I was thinking, why pay over $300 when I can get a 10/22 for half that.

If I cut down a 10/22 and add on a pistol grip ONLY without a stock or vertical fore grip do I need to SBR it? Or do they still consider it a SBR because it started life as a rifle. But how would they know?

    Just thinking of options...

If I recall correctly there is no diffrence in recievers between the charger pistol and 10/22 rifle which keeps the stocks interchangeable. in reguards to chopping the barrel and putting only a pistol grip on it... unless it's registered as a pistol it would have to have the 16inch barrel, shorter barrel needs to be registered SBR. sorry man! If you really dig the short barrel and want to run a 22lr set up suppressed have you thought about registering your AR as a SBR and getting a spikes tactial dedicated 22lr upper?

I know you can get a aftermarket 10/22 receiver. Is it possible to just put a pistol barell on it and it's a pistol?

Federal law distinguishes between 2 identical pistols. A virgin receiver built into a pistol with a barrel under 16" and no buttstock is fine, whether you built it or the manufacturer built it.

A receiver that ever had a buttstock attached is a rifle, and the definition of a short-barreled rifle includes any weapon made from a rifle if the barrel is under 16" OR the overall length is under 26". So making a pistol from a standard 10/22 is a Federal felony, but buying the identical pistol from the factory is OK.

There's some question about whether you can buy a pistol, or a virgin receiver that you make into a pistol, then turn it into a legal rifle (you can), then turn it back into a pistol yourself (you can't). The conservative view is that making it into a rifle prevents you from then making it into a pistol, since it's clearly a "rifle" once you add the buttstock and long barrel, and you can't make a pistol out of a rifle.

The risky view is that you can swap back and forth, under some theory that you're doing the conversion yourself and that's different than changing a rifle that someone else built, or else it's magically "always a pistol" even when you make it into a rifle. These people find support for this theory in the Thompson/Center case, however the Thompson/Center case says no such thing. That case answers the question of whether an unassembled kit is constructively an SBR, it says nothing about whether you can swap back and forth once it's assembled.

Hit the nail on the head. Buy a NEW receiver from Brownells or one of the company's that does not have a barrel or stock and start building from there. Should be a cheep option and I might have a source for factory 10 inch barrels though I don't know what he is asking for them... PM me and I can put you in touch with him, he is a busy man though.

    Gotcha!

I think I'll take a friend's advice and just get the pistol for now. If I wanted to SBR something it would be a 9mm AR.

But I like keeping my options open.

if you SBR something, it'd be smart to do a AR lower, in multi caliber.

like 22lr/9mm/5.56, then you cna swap parts out to make a more fun gun.

remember, the AR is the "swiss army knife of guns" in that manner.
