    Two things:

1.) Once you determined the threat was outside, the .45 should have been holstered and the M-4 should have taken it's place.

2.) Having the M-4 at the ready, would have allowed you to eliminate all occupants of the cars. A shovel and some elbow grease would have taken care of the rest, and then nobody would be worried about a return engagement.

Ok, I have a diffrent spin on this ( I must be missing something). I agree with everyone that we have to be carefull and, that he should have not showed his gun and racked the slide becouse he raised the threat on the use of force scale.
    What I don't get is:
You hear a noise you think is a gunshot and the dog is going nuts, so you grab your gun (great call) but, Why do you not have a round in the chamber? If you nead to get your gun and , there is a threat that you nead to stop are you going to say .............please hold on I nead to rack my slide.
Just my 2 cents when i read this post...... thanx Joe
P.S. I am happy all worked out well and you did not have to use your gun.

Joe, i did have a round already chambered. the reaction i got would have been the same had i had my shotgun, the round ejected was held in hand for a single load after a mag dump.

the M4 was back in the bedroom with the wife. she brought it out after they had departed.

after my dog started barking and growling she continued to do so until they departed.

I think that using a standard M-4 carbine to defend the homestead at night is inconsiderate. The noise of a 5.56 round is very loud and would wake the neighbors.

    Buy a silencer.

    Tax: $200
Cost of effective 5.56 suppressor: $500
Letting the elderly neighbors sleep in until morning: Priceless.

I was not aware of that problem in your neck of the woods. That's a shame.
Don't have that problem in my neck of the woods. People out here might get shot that way. Had the problem in Massachusetts.

Some local kids decided to harass one town's police chief when he was off-duty at home (Small Town America, gotta love it!). He went outside, yelled at the kids; they ignored him. He racked his shotgun; they paid attention. End of problem. PSP talked to him about it afterwards, but that was the end of that.

For a noise complaint out here in Westlyvania we can call the "local" police until we're blue in the face. Many areas don't have "local" police, so they have to depend on PSP. At three in the morning there are maybe two or three troopers on the road for the county (depending on the county), and they could be at the other end of the county. Depending on 911 is a luxury we don't have. PSP has already essentially told one community, "...unless it involves blood or a body, we're not showing up."

When I was a volunteer firefighter, I've waited up to two hours for PSP to show up.

Yup. Whatever social contract I hold with the police is tempered by their 45 minute response time when someone smashed in our front living room window.

They finally showed up and apologized for their (PSP) response time. I told them that I did not expect them at all, given recent SCOTUS decisions that tell us that police have no legal obligations to protect citizens. I told them that they were only called so we could file a report with the insurance company, and that I do not expect police to protect my life or property.

i have an Ops Inc. 15th series Suppressor waiting in the wind. my class 3 dealer should have gotten his FFL by now and ordered one for me. i went through PDC for mine, there was a change of ownership and they had to do the FFL swap.
