"I'll kill you!". Cond red in a Gun free zone.
So where I work. A hospital system this morning a 302 pt who was calm and nice this morning, lost it and snapped. Standing with a medic who is 5ft 2in. I notice the 302 guy starting to peek out of the security room. He starts talking to the guard. Then pushes, security pushes back. 302 guy DROPS him and makes his was towards the door I was standing at. Ive never seen anyone with that look ever and be that pissed off. I grab the guy buy his left arm, grab his neck with my right hand the security guard grabs his shirt. I put my left foot in between his legs and we both go down. This pissed the guy of more. "ill kill you!! Ill get you!!" and tries to take swings and luckily I was able block his swings. His kicking though got my knee. By that time another person came and helped out with his right arm while he was still punching at us. It took 8 people to hold this guy down. He finally got a shot and was calming down.
It made me think though. If this guy would have turned around slightly more he would have beat the shit out of myself or the
Other guy. No maybe about it. He stated his plans and he tried. I can't carry at work. Not even OC spray. Which if I had any he would have gotten it as he was swinging.
This is part of my job to help the ER out. I don't normally but I was in the right spot at the right time I guess. Although if one of his punches would have connected it would have done damage. And I would have punched back. He had no drugs or alcohol in his system just pure rage. I don't know how any of his swings missed me.
So I'm posting this wondering have you ever been threatened to be killed or beat in a gun free zone?
Typed on my iPhone. Sorry for any typos.

Yeah I've seen people freak out in the Room. Never one that got out though.
I was more worried about him getting to the short female medic. So I figured the faster he goes down the better. Luckily he got some meds now.
I'm an EMT for the hospital. We have to help out in the ER at times.

I often wonder why they don't issue tranquilizer dart guns in hospital areas where violent patients may be found - everybody stand back and let 'em have it in the butt... I realize that dosage may be based on body mass but it seems like a better scenario than 8 bodies holding one down while someone has to reach in as stick the perp while trying to stay whole. Sorta reminds me of the football game in the M*A*S*H movie (not trying to make light of what happened here though).
Years ago, I had to take my wife to the ER at HUP for a neutropenia incident on a rainy night in March. While we waited, they brought in two bloodied up LEOs (their blood) and a guy who was obviously on something - he was pretty well banged up too but sure as hell wasn't feeling anything. They put him in a holding room, off the ER, with a wire reinforced window. The bugger kept running at the door, battering the window with his forehead - cracked it at about the second hit. He kept screaming he was going to "kill all you m-f'ers". Nobody was willing to go in there and deal with him. Finally, he hit the window one time too many and dazed himself. Then they went in.
So yeah, by association with all in the ER, been there, done that...

Once the adrenaline goes down I have been wonder "what if he got the upper hand?". He was taller and built more then I am. It would have been over. If this would have been somewhere else I would have had an upper hand. OC spray would have helped atleast. I think.

I am a ED Nurse (used to be a psych nurse). It happens all the time. The best we can do is have enough staff to intervene if needed. If things go really bad, our PD are absolutely wonderful about responding to the ED! We are lucky though, we have a locked seclusion room.
It sucks to have to rely on that, but that is how it is in our hospital also.

It surprises me that PD didn't escort the Pt and Medic in. I know our PD are really good about responding to all psych calls to keep the medics safe. I know when we get pt's like that the police are usually comming with them and stay until the pt is under control.

Uh, no. To quantify that "no" though, I can offer this. Many, many years ago, I was working security at Chambersburg Hospital, and the mental ward was on 3 east. I got a radio call of a disturbance and ran for the elevator. As I was exiting the elevator, I had about half a second to duck under a swinging suitcase. The suitcase belonged to a gentleman about 6'2" and 280 lbs. I was getting ready to go in low, and was told " stop, please don't hurt him " by his sister and that he was autistic and just scared. I had everyone back off and tried to talk to him. After giving him a few minutes of crying and letting him get tired of swinging that suitcase around, I finally got him to sit and get to the issue. The problem, he had left his stuffed monkey in the car and panicked as soon as he realized. His autism kept him from communicating this in his panic. I told him how growing up, I had a stuffed monkey called "Zippy" that went everywhere with me, and I knew how he felt. During this moment, his sister ran to the car and fetched it ( I don't remember its name ). Once monkey was in hand, the rest was a cake walk. I know this isn't the same circumstances, but its as close as I can come. Good job on keeping your head ( on your shoulders ) and doing what needed to be done. Rep.
