Is Pike County Firearm Friendly?

Been reading the threads here. There is a lot of talk about influx of NY & NJ folks and the gist seems that they are bringing their anti-2nd Amendment ignorance with them.

I could be one of the those NJ folks on the move, only difference is that I am considering leaving NJ to escape the next round of gun ban efforts which have started in earnest, even though Obama is not even inaugurated yet.

I work in NYC, and even if I have to take the train from Port Jervis to work every day, I'll move to PA and do that commute before I surrender even one firearm to Jon Corzine and his band of Democrat gungrabbers.

BUT, it won't do me much good if Pike County is slow on permits for owning firearms or is out closing ranges for any number of feeble excuses. NJ is slowing the whole process up and is closing ranges at every opportunity.

Do I need this LTCF to have a long gun? How long does it take to get an LTCF? Do you need to get a new permit every time you seek to buy a handgun?

You poor, confused man. Pa does not have silly permit for owning firearms. We are a shall issue state which means unless you are disqualified from owning a firearm, or are, in the local sheriff's view a danger to the public, you get a LICENSE TO CARRY FIREARMS when you apply for one. The LTCF allows you to carry your firearms concealed, or in your vehicle.

When you buy a handgun, you fill out a form and the shop submits the info to the PSP via the Pennsylvania Insta Check System (PICS). As long as you are not disqualified from owning or possessing a firearm, you will be approved and leave with your purchase.

Do I need this LTCF to have a long gun?

No sir. The LTCF has nothing to do with long guns, which BTW may not be carried loaded in your vehicle.

How long does it take to get an LTCF?

Depends on the county. They have 45 days to issue or deny. Some counties issue on the spot, others will draw the process out as long as they can, resorting to even claiming the 45 days are business days.

Do you need to get a new permit every time you seek to buy a handgun?

No.There is no permit to buy a handgun. You will need to go through a PICS check each time though.

Coming from the Socialist Republic of New Jersey as I do, you might understand my confusion. We have to have a Firearms ID Card before we can even own a firearm. That card, depending on how anti-gun your town's police department bureaucrats are, takes over a month at best. There are horror stories of some people having to hire lawyers to spring theirs loose. You are fingerprinted, have to have an extensive criminal background check run, have a mental health check run (no politician ever had to prove they were sane and look at the damage they are capable of). You cannot buy a firearm without this card.

Buying a handgun is getting harder all the time, even in my town where there is at least one pro-2d amendment officer that will not let the office staff sit on them, which is what they do when he isn't around to keep them moving.

That's why I ask if Pike is friendly. Whoever administers your process at the local level can make or break the application of the law, even in a "shall issue" jurisdiction.

the only "unfriendly" place in PA i can think of is Philthadelphia; even so, they must follow the law pertaining to the issuance of licenses. as far as Pike county, i've never heard of any complaints about that area.

even if i did, it'd still be better than NJ....

I am a transplant from NJ to Pike county myself. I have been in Pa about 2 years now.
No FID, No Permit to Purchase a Handgun.
You go to the store, put down your money, they run PICS (usually about 5-10 minutes) and leave with your gun of choice, long or short.
No mag limits. You can even have NFA items.
Carry Permits, correctly called LTCF, for Licence to Carry Firearm, are administered in most areas of Pa by the county Sherriff. I believe that Philly is the exception.
Pike county sherriff is pretty gun friendly.
My LTCF took about 10 business days. Fill out the form, give them 2 references (they do contact them), have a clean record, pay the fee, $24 if I recall correctly (don't quote me one the $), get your pic taken when you pick it up.
I believe that the state range in northern Pike is back open after the lead removal.
There are lots of private ranges, most require membership, some $$$, some not so bad.
I think that you are looking in northern Pike from your post. I am in southern Pike, in Bushkill.

I'm from Wayne which is Pike's friendly neighbor. All you need to purchase a gun in the state of Pa..is a valid driver license. From there, they'll do the PICS and you're off. To carry a weapon on your person, you'll have to get a LTCF issued to you. Max is 45 days(took me about 36) for the background process. Basically, if you can own a gun, you can get a license to carry firearms. The sheriff may interview you?? Not sure how Pike works but that's the way it's done in Wayne. Once issued, It's good for 5 years. So you'll have nothing to worry about.

The big difference between Pa, and N.J. is that in N.J., you have to prove you should be allowed to have a gun. In Pa., they have to prove you are not allowed to have a gun. Come on over to the light my man...

And as for local issuing authorities breaking the law here, they have 45 days to issue or deny, and when they deny, there is a very specific procedure they must adhere to. Unless there is a valid reason why you are not to have a firearm, you will get it, even if you are unlawfully denied by a local issuing authority.

I'm a recent (3 yrs) transplant from NYC, Pa. is very refreshing after coming from the Big city attitude down there. Pike county is now and willremain my choice of where to live free. PM me if you need any specific info.

Pike county is pretty good. I wish there were more places to shoot, but other than that no complaints. I got my permit to carry in under a month no problems. I drive 150 miles a day just so I don't have to live in NY.
