This is showing my ignorance here, but even with a low power laser, couldn't you just run it through more than once? Take a little off each time and eventually it's deep enough to do something with.
As long as it's not moving around between each pass it shouldn't be too hard.

Re: The Jolly Roger ARRRRRRRRRR-15 is done...
the laser just doesnt have what it takes to vaporise metal. it will mark it but actually cutting it would be a pain. moving isnt my worry, distortion and reflection is, once you get through the fist layer, now your delaing with a shiny metal, that reflects the laser, and it melts the surrounding area which make the image less crisp.

Re: The Jolly Roger ARRRRRRRRRR-15 is done...
Years ago (1980s) I took handguns to Things Remembered in Exton Mall to have them engraved with text. It was a tad bit on the shallow side, but it was always neat and clean. It worked best on stainless steel.
Also disassemble as much as possible so they can clamp to any available flat surfaces. Take some leather or scrap suede so they can soft-jaw during the clamping process.
They were a little skittish about engraving firearms at first, but after several successful jobs & no failures, they associated me with easy money. Sometimes they requested insurance, but it wasn't a lot more.
Don't know if they still consider guns as engraveable items. Give 'em a call if this interests you.
