What's your budget?
For low cost options, there the Taurus PT1911, the STI Spartan, and the RIA Tactical. All are decent quality with nice sights/features.
There's also the Springfield Mil-Spec and the Para GI Expert, but I don't like 1911s without beavertail grip safeties and I don't like GI style sights. YMMV.

Re: Which 1911 to choose
If it is not a colt it is a copy. That said we have a Springfield and a old Norinco both are just as good to shoot as the Colt.
IMHO in todays world about the only difference between the different manufactures is finish and bells and whistles.
There are somethings that we feel are worth the price such as beavertail grip safety, decent sights and an arched mainspring housing.Courage is being scared to death--but saddling up any way. John Wayne

Re: Which 1911 to choose
Para's are not too bad from a price point.
I have a p14 45.
It was problematic at first, but after about 300+ rounds it has smoothed out. Damn thing weighs so much tho. . .
How much are you looking to spend?
I would say Kimber has one of the biggest "followings" short of Colt. . . If I was in the market for a 1911, it would be a Kimber.

Re: Which 1911 to choose
I have an RIA Government Model-the low end one. I think that it is about $399.00 new. It is a fabulous gun. I have not had any problems with it at all. When I first got the gun, I ran some snap caps through it and they did not extract. I was very worried. However, I took it to the range (several times) and several hundred rounds later, I have not had any problems whatsoever--no FTE, FTF, etc. I did purchase Chip McCormack magazines for it, but I don't think that this is required for good functioning.
I am not a 1911 expert, but this gun runs just fine for me.

Im in Love with my Springfield Stainless GI & thay wont break the bank.. I also like Para's & the RA's as far as less expensive 1911's go...

Re: Which 1911 to choose
IMHO buying a gun is like buying a car. They lose value rapidly as soon as they leave the lot. That being said you can get a nicer gun for much cheaper if you buy used. I've only ever bought a brand new gun once, and don't regret it because it was a Ruger MKIII, but if given the opportunity to do it again I would have looked for a used one.
Check the classifieds, there are a few nice 1911s for sale.Selling off a a sizeable Spyderco collection here

Re: Which 1911 to choose
I agree with checking for a used 1911 you can get some good prices also check the local gunshops that way you may be able to get a 30 day warranty just in case there are issues with it. I have only had sig and kimber 1911s and both are a little pricey. I was just reading an article about the springfield being one of the best choices for a base gun, this is what cylinder & slide says and their pretty well regarded in that area. I can also say handle before you buy because not everyone is going to feel good to you. Good luck.
