Default Thompson 1927 A5 Pistol (TOMMY GUN)

I found one of these I want to buy and need some info If there is a resident Tommy pro around. It is good condition not prefect has a 50 round drum and 2 30 round sticks not original case. The pistol does not have a spot to mount a stock. Also the ser.# is in the low 900's.

I have looked around online and cant find any good info.

no such thing as a "pistol" thompson, only a thompson you can't mount a buttstock on.
200 dollars later for an sbr stamp, and you're on the easy route to a short barreled thompson, which you can then put a stock on.
it already has the 10.5" barrel on it.
it's only metal, we can out think it....

Then maybe you should let them know that it's not a pistol.

I have the T1 and it's a very nice firearm. Well made, extremely accurate. I bought it specificaly to dispatch nazi zombies.

Shooting .45acp out of a carbine like this is crazy. The powder is all burned long before the bullet reaches the muzzle and there is almost no report. You can actually hear the bullet hit the back drop. Very cool.

This site has some good info, http://www.notpurfect.com/main/thompson.html

Thompson drum mags can be a source of reliability issues. If you don't wind the drum spring tight enough it will missfeed and typicaly dislodge the extractor from the bolt. It happened to me once and I was able to reinstall the extractor after freeing the action. PITA.

The instructions tell you to wind the drum X many clicks. Winding the drum 360 degrees should produce four clicks, one every 90 degrees.
Wind magazine, according to size, and instructions inscribed on magazine body.
9 to 11 clicks for the 50 round magazine
4 to 6 clicks for the 10 round magazine
7 to 9 clicks for the 39 round magazine
15 to 18 clicks for the 100 round magazine
The problem is, on some of the drums there are internal rivets that are riding proud and can emit unwanted clicks that can fool you into thinking you've wound it enough. I didn't realize what was happening until I saw the following quoted information posted on the net somewhere.

I think because I didn't wound the drum enough the bullets weren't being properly pushed out of the drum and it pulled the extractor off the bolt. But now that I'm wounding the drum properly the bullets are coming out of the drum with no hiccups. The instructions say to wound the drum 9-11 clicks, it should say 9-11 (1/4) turns and not clicks. Just ingore the clicking sounds when you wound the drum. And this is for the 50 round drum, I turn mine 3 full 360* turns. The 10 and 100 drum are different.

    nah the numbers good.
you need to open it up and grind a taper on the rivets that hold the plate that holds the mounting bracket.

    Update 2/21/09:

I took the Thompson back to the range this morning for the second time and it worked flawlessly. The Thompson ran like a sewing machine spitting out 110 rounds w/o once choking and that was from (2) 30 round sticks and the 50 round drum. The 50 round drum worked flawlessly too. I took the advice of another member and wound the drum (3) 360* turns (i.e. 12 (1/4) turns). Plenty of spring tension to snug all 50 rounds. Thanks for all the feedback. David
Many, many people have experienced this and never been aware what was causing it. Over the years I've seen several used Thompsons sitting in gun stores because the owner never found out what's causing the problem and just washed their hands of it.

Mine is reliable, I use a very light coat of Tetra gun grease on the bolt and other bearing surfaces.
