Moving to Pa question
I will be moving to Pittsburgh on the 15th of May. I was wondering would there be any legal ramifications of transporting my firearms with me. I.E. firearms across state lines and not having a LTCF. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Moving to Pa question
There is more info needed.. You say firearms, pistols or longarms? What state are you moving from? Will you be crossing other states?

Re: Moving to Pa question
There's no Federal implication based on ATF guidance (I'm assuming here that you're not talking about NFA firearms) nor is there any in Pa. I'm not familiar with Va law but I doubt that they have a problem.
Just make sure you transport via a method that meets FOPA, Va, and Pa laws. For Pa its unloaded and securely wrapped; do not keep ammo in same container as weapon. Not sure what Va requires but, again, I would think that FOPA would probably suffice. FOPA requires:
during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.IANAL

Re: Moving to Pa question
You never answered if you will be crossing state lines.. And being your moving from VA to Pittsburgh you are probably going to be crossing WV and maybe even Maryland.. Thats where I think it could get sticky? I am not sure how those states would react to you having no ltcf. Anybody?

Thanks Tl .. Interesting though from what I'm reading the firearms have to be totally visible to be trasported in VA..

Re: Moving to Pa question
I believe what you are reading is regarding OC.
I don't find any proscription for vehicular transport in Va laws. It would seem the 'unloaded and securely wrapped' would suffice as it does for range, repair and other transport though I cannot find anything specific regarding 'moving'.
Maybe someone with more familiarity with VA law than I will opine.IANAL

Re: Moving to Pa question
let me get this right. In PA you can get a $26 LTCF and have that locked and loaded on your hip while driving down the road, but any other firearms you have in your vehicle you have to keep the ammo seperate?

Re: Moving to Pa question
BINGO........... but, IIRC you meet the " seperate " portion simply by having the loaded mags or ammo in another " section " of the same overall container.
For instance, a soft sided long gun case, with the gun secured in the main compartment and ammon or loaded mags in the outside pockets meets the requirement. Or for pistols,a back pack with seperate and distinct compartments. IANALSi vis pacem, para bellum
