    Default M4 accuracy question.

I got in little argument with this guy at the range yeasterday. we were both shooting at rifle range, he was shooting Ruger No1 in 25-06(I think. Beautiful rilfe tho), using some high powered scope(X16powered) and was getting sub 1" group at 100yrds.

Meanwhile, I was shooting my Bushmaster AR15 with chrome lined 16" barrel with 1 turn in 9” twist, with X9 powered scope, using Winchester 55gr FMJ .223, shooting 1.75" group(later it turned out that my scope ring was lose ). I'm using mil spec trigger.

He tells me that AR15 without prescision barrels are not capable of shooting anything less then 2". Which i disagree. I think once my scope is sighted properly, with 16" barrel, I should be able to shoot less then 1" at 100yrds.

    What you guys think?

1 - 2 MOA is well within the margin of error for an accuracy number. I.e., not all ARs are guaranteed to be 1 MOA weapons. Some will be 1 MOA, some slightly better, some slightly worse. And that's assuming the perfect shooter. Shooters have a lot more variability than guns.

1 MOA or less with a free float tube and non chromed barrel with handloads is almost a given.

I've never seen an AR shoot any worse than 2" with ammo it likes.

Most of todays chrome lined AR's will shoot 1-2 MOA.

I think it's important to note that getting a 2moa gun to 1moa gun is easier than getting a 1moa gun to .25 moa.....or even .5 moa. For that type of work you do need a decent barrel.

Bushmaster says I should be getting 1 moa out of my M4, however.....I wasn't even close at 100 yards. It was more like 3 moa from a bench.

After talking with the LEO Bushmaster rep, he issued an RMA for my barrelled upper receiver in order to have it checked.

All you need to do to a AR-15 to get it close to 1/2 minute groups is
    1. New barrel by a quality barrel manufacture such as
Hart, Kreiger, Shilen come to mind.
    2. Free float the barrel.
    3. Install a match trigger.
    4. Better match sights.
    5. Quality match ammo or good hand loads.

    Get the book:
The complete Guide to AR-15 Accuracy by Derick Martin or
The Competitive AR-15 by Glen D. Zediker

2,3,5 work well on Factory rifles and sub MOA groups are capable with these mods. Both books recommend these inexpensive mods and that you should
shoot the gun until you need a new barrel.

Bushmaster Customer Service is quite good. "The customer is always right" still applies there.

1-2 MOA is about the norm I would say more dependent on shooter and food than gun.

Do you have pressure on the barrel? Vertical stringing can be heat or resting the barrel on the bags. Also, check the parallax on your scope.
