Default Legality of shooting on my own property

not sure if this is the right subforum.. but heres my question.

Is there a law against discharging (shooting) a firearm on my own property? We have a decent sized yard (1.2 acres or so), however there are definitely neighbors in ear shot and they could easily see my holding my Sig 522 and think its a evil black gun. So is there anything in the law that does not allow me to fire the weapon in my back yard?

There could be a local ordinance the prohibits the firing of a weapon for other than self defense, it is all dependent on the township. You would need to check with local LEOs to find an answer to your question.

    ^^^^^^ What he said.
Sometimes LEO's won't know, and rather than look it up, they may just tell you no.

Or post your town here as maybe someone here may know.

Either this ^, or take the chance and ask the LEO's...

You don't want to be fined for not complying with any ordinances if there is some in existence already.

Try calling your township before the LEO. You shouldn't need to give your name or address.

You may want to try just swinging by the municipal/township building and talk to them. It may be a bit of an advantage to talk to them one-on-one in person.

I don't know for sure, but that's what I would do...

    Just a suggestion.

Then not much we can do here for you. You can try to see if your twp has the ordinances posted on its website, if it has one, or google for some other independent source.

With 1.2 acres, unless its in the middle of an undeveloped area, you can count on complaints.

I really dont think the admins at the township are going to know, theyll probably just refer me to the township LEO's.
