Default Re: Pittsburgh Zoo firearms policy?

Oh yeah... apparently there was some sort of zoological conference going on while we were there. All sorts of people with name badges hanging from their necks with the names of the zoos they were from. I saw a few that said "Toronto Zoo", and I believe there were some from Cleveland as well as what had to be many, many more.

It was interesting to hear the comments from these visiting "zoo people" regarding our zoo here in Pittsburgh. Most seemed to be impressed with what they were seeing. At one point, we went to the underwater viewing section (tunnel) since we were lucky enough to be there on one of the two days of the week that they do the Sand Tiger Shark feeding, and as we waited for feeding time, more and more of these visiting zoologists arrived to watch too.

Bear with me... there is something "gun related" in here, I promise.

Just before the feeding began, a Pgh Zoo employee was heard telling another employee to block zoo visitors (us) without badges from entering the viewing area. I guess they wanted to make room for all these "important" people, and screw the people who paid good money to come to the zoo. The wife and I agreed that we were not leaving unless we were told we had to. Hell, we waited 20 minutes to see this, and I wasn't ready to just walk away, so we stayed.

As we watched the sharks being fed, (pretty cool, btw) we got to hear all these visiting zoo experts talk about "their sharks", and how their facilities differed, and so on. Lots of accents, so I assume they were here from all over the place.
As I noted the word "Toronto Zoo" on a name badge, and overheard a discussion about a tank in Australia. I began to think about the fact that while I very much share their interest and passion for wildlife, I wondered how much interest they would have in the fact that a "regular guy" standing among them was wearing a handgun under his shirt.

I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Should have done this yesterday as I'm heading out the door in a couple hours.

Can I get an 2011 update on if the zoo is posted or has searches/metal detectors? I will be CC.

    Thanks in advance.

Well I'm here and found out on my own. No searches and no obvious postings. However we already had our passes from a group event so we did not have to go through the ticket line.

I was at the zoo in June 2011 and I had no problems concealing my LCP. There were no metal detectors. You're fine CCing at the zoo. Off topic but appearantly the zoo has decieded to go for the wild theme and allow weeds and all kinds of other shit to overgrow the entire zoo making it look very unattractive, but the zoo has signs everywhere telling you it's not weeds and they're going for the natural look

I had no issues the whole day. I also have a LCP.

On my way out when there where not crowds at the ticket booths I took an extra good look. The zoo really does not want you to smoke there but they do not mention firearms at all in any of there signage.

I don't know what I'd do if a lion or tiger escaped, the LCP would probably just pissed it off.

    Maybe I should get a LCR .357.

I'm betting they keep the animals well fed. I read in the paper once that once a sea lion got loose and went for a swim in the shark tank. Sharks didn't care.

I'm more worried about the human animals in the surrounding areas.
