SBR Maintenance Question
Let's say I take a gun and turn it into an SBR, going through all the proper channels, and start shooting the thing. Eventually it is going to need maintenance, possibly significant maintenance. Is there anything on the gun that cannot be replaced with a new part? Can it just be re-engraved if the part that was engraved needs to be replaced? Or is there some part of the law that says something has to remain that is original?
Thanks.

Re: SBR Maintenance Question
So long as you can keep the serial number the same, and engrave it to the same specs as you noted on the original forms i don't think you'd have a problem.

Re: SBR Maintenance Question
I would imagine the only part you could not replace is the stripped lower receiver, assumng its an Ar15. Having it re-engraved seems like it is still building another SBR receiver.
Maybe someone with a bit more info can chime in.

Re: SBR Maintenance Question
If for some reason the receiver is damaged beyond repair then you are SOL and out the $200 stamp. You can not transfer the old serial number to another receiver. At that point you could write to the ATF notifying them of the receivers status and they will update the registry.

Re: SBR Maintenance Question
Im gonna go with Kramer.
Besides, if I damage a reciever beyond repair, atleast while firing it, the last thing on my mind will be the $200 stamp. I would worry about finding the missing parts of my hand and fingers.
I really wouldn't worry about any added or extra care in maintaining it more than your normal weapons.

Re: SBR Maintenance Question
It is not an AR15. I considered that, but do not have the money. I am looking at making a Kel Tec PLR 22 into an SBR. The part with the serial number is actually a ring around the receiver and the barrel, so it will probably never break. Everything else can be replaced, or so I would imagine. It is a toy. All my guns, with the exception of the SD ones, are essentially toys. If things get to the point where I need to consider an SBR for real work, I probably won't be too worried about writing in to the government for their permission. Of course, we all know that would never happen.

Re: SBR Maintenance Question
You'll be dead long before your rifle needs that type of maintenance.
I've already swapped calibers on a SBR'd Ak , No big deal. Send em a letter.
I won't go any further on this subject.
