Suggestions for .22LR targets
I'm looking to plink from far away. Read: over 100 yards. I'd like something that will give a nice audible *PLINK* sound, won't be damaged by the .22LR (even at 50 yards) and is cheap.
I'm wondering if a cast iron pan will do? Or any other suggestions. I'm looking cheap. I'm not looking to get some custom 1' diameter hardened steel plate that will stop a 7.62 that's going to cost $100.
I'm thinking $10-20. I can probably goto a yardsale or fleamarket and find an old cast iron skillet or two.
ASSUMING a .22LR won't go through or dent those, but I don't know. Anyone know?

Re: Suggestions for .22LR targets
Just get a piece of scrap 1/4" steel plate. Does not need to be fancy AR500 hardened, plain mild steel will be fine for .22LR at those ranges.
Cast iron may shatter? I have not tried shooting that, but it is not near as tough as steel.

Re: Suggestions for .22LR targets
Well heck man. If you want to shoot at distance why not try something that will really challenge your skills.
Try rimfire silhouette. Ranges from 40 meters for the chicken to 100 meters for the ram. The turkey and pig are at 60 and 80 meters, but it's been a while, so I forget which goes where.
Most of the larger supply houses sell swinging sets so you don't have to walk out and reset them for each shot.
If you follow the rules (just a little bit) you'll do all of your shooting from a standing offhand position.

Re: Suggestions for .22LR targets
For a .22 at those distances, a railroad tie plate would probably work well I'd imagine:
You can find them discarded along railroad tracks rusting away nearly everywhere. They do have some square holes in them where the spikes are driven through them so they may send some ricochets... but at far distances with a .22, I'd imagine it would work fine. I did try them with a centerfire handgun and didn't like the sound of ricochets (though, in fairness, they weren't back at me, just the noise was discomforting).... but they will give the audible ping you're looking for. Oh, and use the back side of the plate, which is flat.

Buy a case of cheap canned pop. (Soda if you don't know what pop is) Get it warm, shake them up and you'll be able to tell a hit. Makes quite a mess though.

Re: Suggestions for .22LR targets
If you have your own printer, go to:
www.mytargets.com or www.targetz.com and print your own. I use scrap paper from work and print on the back of them. I make 15-120 copies of each and it becomes quite cheap and easy. If you don't want to print your own, go to KMart, WalMart or Costco and pick up a giant pack of paper plates for a few bucks.
