Default Do I need to use my front sight?

I have been around guns for a long time however red dot sights are new to me and I do not have one as of yet.
I have an AR which I built a few months ago and am considering a scope. My question is: If I go with a red dot type of sight do I need to use the front sight or can I just fold it down and use it as a back up sight. Will putting the red dot on the target w/o using the front sight guarantee that i will hit the target if I do my part or must I line up the red dot with the front sight like i would with the rear sight?

No, once sighted in, you can just put the dot where you want the bullet to go (both eyes open). It will appear to you that the dot is actually on the target but it isn't. It is superimposed on it. It's a very easy to use system. (Lasers also...but with a laser the dot really is on the target)

That's what I thought but I wanted to confirm it. I underestand the laser thing and that the dot from the sight is not on the target where as the laser it is (which is visible to the bg).

    Thanks for the reply.

If you get lucky you may get someone on here who will let you try their setup. The members here are a pretty good group and many seem willing to show one of their "babys" to someone who asks.

That would be nice. I don't know any shooters here in york county since I moved here not to long ago from MD. I'm glad I'm not there anymore their gun laws have gotten worse from what I have heard.
