here it is. 78 Romy G kit on NDS-3 which I grit blasted & parkerized. Grip had to be replaced by 922r friendly one for now. The furniture is as received. She shoots well. Now to come up with a name.

Man .. I wish I had the tools/knowledge to build one. The tools is the biggest hang up for me, as I don't think it's that hard to build one. Plus headspacing would worry me.

    Very nice.

Wha??? Don't you have 5000 posts on the Ak Forum?

I made my own tools per web-shared wisdom (such as found on theakforum)

Pulling the barrel off using a gear puller I had laying around

$13 bolt cutter from Harbor Freight ground into a Front Trunnion rivet tool

Then I made a trigger guard rivet tool. I squeezed the rivets for my 1st build in a very large bench-mounted vise. But bought the 12 ton press from H.F. for build #2

Then to put the barrel back on, I used a piece of allthread and cut & shaped a metal slab to contact the front trunnion in just the right spots

Making the tooling was 85% of the effort ! I did it because I was bored and am an engineer so this sort of thing is in my DNA.

If you use a matching-numbers kit with the original barrel in the trunnion, then the headspace will be fine. To be finicky- the bolt & front trunnion must match, and the bolt carrier ought to match because with a non-matching carrier you could have a situation where the carrier hits the trunnion before the bolt rotates fully into locking position, the probability of this is not too high but it could happen & you have to be aware and know what to look for. Just buy a matching #s kit and you'll be OK.

Ha ... nope. I think I might be around 500. I'm more of a lurker there. I love just reading some of the technical discussions.

The actual build, I'm not too worried about. It's more dealing with the headspacing. There aren't many kits out anymore that have the original barrels so we will see.

One of my biggest concerns if I start building AKs ... is that I won't be able to stop buying kits

    (raises hand) Same fear here.
I have a lot of tools, just not the "right" tools for the job. I'm starting out in the baby pool by converting a Saiga.
Props to Enfielder; you make it look simple
