Any serious use for a short double barrel for defense?
I have made several of them over the years, usually from Stevens 311's and similar guns, just because I like them - I'm wondering if you think there is a serious reason to have one around for a house gun. They are certainly reliable, but so is any decent pump.
FWIW, I now rely on a short barred Mossberg 500 and have no plans to change that, but I'm thinking about another coach gun type just for????

For me, I have 4 Mossy pumps, and a Stevens 311 short double. Never hurts to have a back up.

Re: Any serious use for a short double barrel for defense?
the advantage of the shortened double is the decreased length without a tax stamp. i have a couple dozen vintage doubles, and a few of them are short. one was bought with a broken wrist and a severe bend at 24" from breach. i shortened it to 18+ and made a buttstock with a 9" LOP. it goes about 30" now. you just can't do that with a buttstock on a pump without paying $200 and waiting.

Re: Any serious use for a short double barrel for defense?
For me personally I would have no use for one but it differs depending on what you are used to.
I grew up shooting skeet with a Winchester 1300 Speed pump so naturally when I went for a home defense shotgun the Winchester 1300 Speed Pump "Defender" model was perfect.
My buddy always shot skeet with his dad's SxS and was quite good at "running the gun". If he were to choose a shotgun for home defense I would easily understand his choice of a shortened SxS given his familiarity with the gun.
If you just want another reason to buy one then Yes, everybody must have atleast one more than however many you already have or they are not a serious gun person.

Re: Any serious use for a short double barrel for defense?
Perhaps not as a primary.
Definitely as a secondary for additional person in house.
It will take practice to shoot, break and shake/pull (most coach guns don't have automatic ejectors) and reload from butt stock sleeve.
I have a 5-shot sleeve on my Stoeger coach gun.
Mostly consider it a fun gun and a backup.
Mossberg 590A1 as primary HD shotgun.
Three gun combo:
Glock 22
Bushmaster AR
Mossberg 590A1.

It would certainly be more effective than harsh words.
