    Default Sight Falls Out

I just got a new 18" improved cylinder barrel with rifle sights for my 870. I found last night that the front sight blade is really loose. Loose enough for the sight to fall out when the shotgun is racked while being held sideways.

Any suggestions on what to use to secure it. I thought about staking it, but am not sure I want it to be permanent.

    Thanks

Buy some brass shim stock and cut a piece the same size as the base of the sight and tap it in along with the sight. If still loose, add another piece. Or you might try one of the Loctites, they come in various "locking abilities" so you can pick a permanent or semi-permanent variety.

NEW barrel? Call Remington and complain.

New to you, but not new. Loctite.

As Lycanthrope said, new, call and tell them about the problem. Not quite new and nearly a good fit, use lockTite if you have it.

Depending on how loose it is, there are alternatives to buying shim stock or LockTite. Aluminum beverage cans make good shim stock if you happen to need something about .004" thick, (top and bottom of cans are thicker but I'd be willing to bet that you would need something much thinner). Paper and cellophane tape are available in several different thicknesses, although not as durable as metallic shim they may be quite suitable for what you need.
Fingernail polish, lacquer or super glue have been known to save the day when lockTite wasn't available.

Locktite and superglue aren't really good for filling in gaps. I'd contact the manufacturer.

Agreeing with Wiley, that's the first step, especially if it's new, as in just bought it from a dealer. If it's defective the manufacturer should make it right at no cost. The dealer who sold it should may be/ should be willing to help you out. If you bought it used and it's just "new to you" you still want to contact the manufacturer to see what, if anything, they may be willing to do to help you out.
In your original post you said you didn't want to stake it because you may not want it to be that permanent, that's where adhesives may come into play, it depends on your circumstances and your intentions.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It is a brand new Remington barrel, and I will be calling them tomorrow.

Remington is sending me a new front sight. Hopefully that fixes it. The customer service rep I spoke to was very helpful.

That's the way customer service is supposed to work, you tell them of a problem and they propose a solution. I wouldn't expect anything less from Remington. If that doesn't fix the problem they'll probably agree to replacing the barrel. It sucks that you have to wait but at least you're not stuck with the task of trying to make do with something sub-standard. That's the positive side of spending the money to buy new instead of used, at least you have some recourse if something isn't right.

As long as they are taking care of the problem I don't mind waiting, within reason. Troubleshooting always takes time.
