They are graduation presents for those few inner-city Chicago school system students who decided to get an education instead of drop out.

It was decided that the students who remained in school to graduate needed appropriate protection from the hundreds who dropped out early to pursue criminal professions.

This is less farfetched than many people think. The leftists HATE home schooling and religious schools because it challenges their monopoly on indoctrination. It wouldn't surprise me if eventually they took it to that level. Remember Elian Gonzales? They sent in a SWAT team to yank that kid out of the house to send him back to Cuba.

They want to keep gang members in class, so they now have a shotgun training class.

apparently the Dept of Edu has a OIG with law enforcement capabilities...

this was the reaponse to a guy on Subguns.com that asked why

    Catherine.Grant@ed.gov

Thank you for your inquiry. The Office of Inspector General is the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Department of Education and is responsible for the detection of waste, fraud, abuse, and other criminal activity involving Federal education funds, programs, and operations. As such, OIG operates with full statutory law enforcement authority, which includes conducting search warrants, making arrests, and carrying firearms. The acquisition of these firearms is necessary to replace older and mechanically malfunctioning firearms, and in compliance with Federal procurement requirements. More information on the OIG and our law enforcement authority is available on our Web site at: www.ed.gov/oig.

Yeah, god forbid that the police would carry weapons and wear body armor when wading through an angry mob to recover a boy who was taken from his father, had his life gravely endangered by his mother, and who was being held against a court order by his relatives who refused to answer the door and were reported to be armed and prepared to use force to "protect" the boy.

Just gotta wonder how many high school principals turn violent when they are caught giving the students cheap pencils.

Are there street gangs dealing in black market textbooks?

Are armed cafeteria ladies not putting enough bologna on sandwiches?
