I'd do some googling on co-witness options for A1/A2 Irons then.

That's why they invented "back up iron sights" (BUIS). So you can have the best of both worlds.

You're not "limiting" yourself with optics. You're enhancing the weapons capabilities. Check around, but just about every Marine and soldier weapon you see as of late has an optic on top of it along with BUIS. Do you honestly think they'd haul that extra gear if it wasn't useful?

At the end of the day it's all about increasing the probability of a kill shot. If an optic increases that probability, why not take it? The back up sights are still there as insurance in case the optic fails. I'd point out though that the military optics (aimpoint, eotech, trijicon) are pretty damn rugged and have phenomenal battery life (for the ones that take batteries).

Your former military, you should know that you never want to be in a fair fight.

My advice would be to just buy a flat top upper, add optics and BUIS to suit, and leave the colt upper alone.

I prefer the A1/A2 look myself, but I have also decided to add an optic. Personally, I don't see the big deal in it. My cheek weld feels just fine!

I think we are getting away from point of my post. I was just wanting to know what I can do to enhance MY rifle without losing the use of my iron sites. Yes being in the military ,I know you want to increase your chance to put rounds on target but also know the depth of the military. Most ops are out and back if something fails you replace it when you back in the wire. I don't have that luxury...

    Got it.

I'd go with one of the mounts that puts the optic over the handgaurds but same plane as the iron sights and call it a day.

Old King Cole was a merry old soul
And a merry old soul was he
Called for his pipe and he called for his bowl
And he called for his Privates, three

"Beer, beer beer!" said the Privates
    For merry Men are We!
None so fare as you can compare
    To the Airborne Infantry!
