Default 14.5" M4 Carbine Upper question

I'm finally going to take the plunge by building my first ar. I'm considering the Bravo Company's 14.5" M4 style upper with pinned flash suppressor to make it 16". Anyone have any experience with a 14.5" M4 style? Positives or negatives are far as reliability? I'm set on the brand but concerned with the overall design of the M4 system as opposed to a 16" midlength.

I intend it to be used as home defense (I live alone in the country so no wall penetration concerns) and as a plinker.

I think bravo has a mid-length 14.5" (with pinned FH) upper coming this summer.
