just FYI, national forests have always followed state law (er, at least, for as long as i can remember).

the recent change applies only to national parks, not national forests (as there was no need to apply it to national forests...since they already worked that way).

The followed state laws as far as hunting goes but technically they did not allow concealed carry unless concealed carry was a hunting only statue. We around with this in Michigan and while on National Forest lands it is not much of a enforced issue largley because of the rareity of federal enforcement officers in National Forest it was still illegal to carry concealed in National Forest. We have National Parks in Michigan that have hunting seasons and they decided about 6 years ago we could no longer carry concealed after they at first decided it was only a state and not a federal issue and then they decided they did not have a law to allow us to carry concealed - go figure, the goverment decides they need to make a law to allow us to do somehting and the - they defined it as they follow all state hunting laws and our CPL law was not a hunting but a general state law - go figure.

    Back to the topic:

I have no doubt some loon is planning something somewhere and the new CC regs will get the blame.

This is a sad, sad, statement of the kind of wussification that's come about.

In a National Parks Service Q&A marked 'DRAFT - Do Not Distribute' (see the Google Search that shows this, first link), the NPS has various answers to questions from folks about the National Parks change in firearms policy last month. This one is the winner:
    Q. I am frightened by firearms and am leaving the park. Can I have my entrance fee refunded? My annual pass refunded?
    A. Park superintendents have the authority to provide a refund if the circumstances warrant it.
Seriously? You have got be fucking kidding me.
