    Default ar15 bolt carrier staking

I have both an RRA entry tactical and a stag 2L ar15s. I've read a little on it , my question is how can you tell if the gas key is staked properly and what issues could arise? Do I need to have this done? I have attached a link on the subject. what do you guys think?

Yes they should be staked. Basically take a center punch to the sides of the two screws holding the gas tube reciever to the bolt carrier group. One stake on the left side and one on the right side of the screw head. You'll notice if they are staked when you remove the bc group from the reciever. I'm sure there are others who can provide more technical info on this.

I didn't notice the pics before. the RRa appears good, the other, hard to tell from the photo. Typically it is dimpled in, like in the bottom photo.

the bottom way of staking has been the standard way to do it forever.

some makers stake with a cold chisel, like the top pic, normally, its the bottom pic way of doing it, standard center punch on the edge of the key screw hole.

either way will work fine, it's just to add resistance to the screws coming loose, which can happen under the extreme heat and pressure of shooting the gun.

the the key and bolt carrier gets a minimum of 13K PSI of hot gasses in there with every shot

Second what JayBell said. Staking is just used to keep a bolt, screw, nut or other item from coming loose from vibration/stress. Both pics looked ok to me.

The bolts need to be staked or they will loosen. This happened to some Bushmasters a couple of years ago. Even Loctite is not enough to hold them in place.

As for the pictures, I have seen more substantial staking. Both pictures look somewhat marginal.

Both of your BCG's need to be re-staked. The RRA is not as bad as the Stag though.

If your gas key comes loose your gun will turn into a bolt gun.
