Re: Dry fire a Rem 870?
make some cheap snap caps with an old shell and a pencil eraser and some epoxy... just knock out the primer epoxy the pencil eraser in trim as needed.. for the other end heated and rolled it so it feeds... i might change my design and put some cardboard and epoxy in the other end to give it some weight insted of an empty shell..
Then you can practice dryfiring all you want along with pumping reloading etc...
and it dont cost you a fortune for snap caps...and your not really mad if you lose one..

Re: Dry fire a Rem 870?
To do a proper function check of the 870 you must dry fire it. This has been taught by police departments who follow Remington's recommendations for training with the 870. The Remington 870 is the largest selling pump action shotgun ever and the reason why is it is well built and rugged. Those are the two reasons why it is used so much by law enforcement.

I don't know if dryfiring damages an 870. However if you use snap caps you get to practice loading and unloading. I love using the cartridge stop to unload mine without pumping it.
