1911 grips, the Lucas way
So, while the rest of the region is having a fit over the snow I had a productive day yesterday.
I recently refinished the grips that I had previously made for my Vaquero
No they are not that glossy, that picture was taken while the oil was drying.
A few days ago I lucked into a couple slabs of stabilized curly maple to make a set of grips for the blackhawk I recently purchased. That project got put on hold when the wife said that she would like to have wood grips on her 1911.
I lucked into a decent piece of birdseye maple I thought would fit the bill. Four hours later, some snow shoveling involved, I was waiting for the finish to dry.
Trace the grips onto the wood, and start cutting
Cut and sand
Measure the holes needed, drill the holes
I used a 13/32" drill to clear the mag release and the mainspring pin
15/64" drill for the grip screw bushings, with a 17/64" drill to clear the base of the bushings
and a 9/32" drill for the screws themselves.
A bit of sanding to shape
Fit the safety levers, this one's not quite there yet
Safety levers fit
A bit of yellow food coloring to bring out the curl
Hit with some steel wool, a couple coats of light stain, install on the gun to check to color...
All that is left to do is wait for the oil finish to dry.

Very nice!
I got a nice piece of figured Ash that I wanted to try to make grips for my 1911 some day, if I ever get around to it.
