Allentown police service pistol?
Who can answer this for me? I'd like to know what they carry, as I'll be applying to the police academy for the July classes. I believe they might be Sigs, but I'm probably wrong.

I know that you're required to pay for your own sidearm. I'm not sure that there is a standardized service pistol for the Allentown PD- they may just be given a caliber range and be told to have at it.

Re: Allentown police service pistol?
You would be right. They carry the Sig Sauer P229 Dak .40 caliber. You don't need to get that to go through the police academy. If you are putting yourself through you can have almost any gun in 9mm, .40, or 45. By the way TrueCrimson's buddy is a firearm instructor at the academy.

Awesome, thank you guys. I'm glad to see it's definitely a Sig and not a Glock. I just do not like the way Glocks feel in my hands.
Now, if I could only get hired by the Whitehall Police Dept, they carry Colt 1911s...NICE!Kimber Pro Crimson Carry II .45 ACP, Taurus PT111 Millennium Pro 9mm

Be glad if you can get a full time job. My nephew has an associates degree and graduated from the academy and he worked a couple depts part time for a number of years till a full time gig finally came up.
I thought Allentown PD was hiring and they send you to the academy?

Re: Allentown police service pistol?
Yeah a buddy of mine graduated from the Allentown Police Academy about 2 years ago and he used his Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm as his sidearm during the course. If you are hired by Allentown or another municipality they will issue your sidearm. He said he recommends using the full size handgun you are most familiar with for the training. There is a lot of theory involved and you want to be saving your thought for that.

Re: Allentown police service pistol?
Do you know if there is a list somewhere on the web that shows what handguns are allowed at the academy? I've searched, but no luck so far. Or, does your buddy have a list?
I'd like to find out what I could use. I only own a Taurus PT111 Millennium Pro, but somehow I don't think that would be allowed. It would be great if they allowed 1911s, because that is what I'm real interested in purchasing next.Kimber Pro Crimson Carry II .45 ACP, Taurus PT111 Millennium Pro 9mm
