I'd go the other way and pick up the service grade from CMP. For $100 more you're getting a gun of known quality. CMP checks out all the guns. The ones that don't meet the minimum standards for service grade are then listed as rack grade. And if prices haven't changed much they are still much cheaper then $1000. Membership with the Garand Collectors Association is what I used to qualify for getting one of these last year.
It's a mix master Springfield,(op rod wasn't a Springfield) but everything else was. I lucked out and got one with a serial number under 1,000,000, so it's from sometime in 1941. It cleaned up nicely and is a fine looking gun.
