Default Can A Township Make Its Own Rules? - [Guilford Twp.]

I went and helped my mom walk our two dogs today at a local park (Norlo Park for you locals) which is owned by Guilford Twp. While I was waiting for her to arrive I read the rules and regulations that are posted and came across this one:

(I had a picture on my phone but it got deleted. I'll try to get another tomorrow)

*Discharging or posession of a firearm is prohibited unless given approval by Guilford Twp.

Like I said there were a few more words in threre but that was the jist of that section.

Are they allowed to regulate carry in a Twp owned park? I know for a fact is not privately owned?

I'll get a picture tomorrow and try to find some contact info if they are in the wrong..

Nope, townships don't get to " in any manner, regulate" when it comes to possession of firearms.

As stated NO, they can not regulate legal possession of a firearm, they can regulate discharge of firearms within township boarders though.

If you are tired of local government by passing state laws I invite you to check out this thread:

While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

As you've already learned, no they can't. Let's find out when the next township meeting is and see if we can't attend together. I'll also try to get on the agenda to address the supervisors about this issue, and maybe you can too if you're comfortable speaking publicly.

This is a pretty laid back area - not typically known for being "anti-gun". I've been to that park quite a few times and never noticed such a rule. Perhaps it's a recent development, but either way, we need to address it.

It sucks that yet another municipality is ignorant of their authority, but it's kind of nice that this time I won't have to drive hours to chastise someone.

*ETA - oh yeah....I'll be OC at the meeting.
