With or without a valid LTCF?

    yes, it is legal.

of course, if it is concealed...or if you drive to the woods and then open carry it...or if you are in a state park (where it must be concealed)...you need an LTCF.

there is also a portion of PA game law that says carrying a gun in the woods can be considered evidence of hunting. having an LTCF would help counter that if it ever became an issue. it might become an issue if, for example, you are carrying a scoped 8" .44 magnum (which would seem to be a hunting, rather than personal protection, gun).

Technically, woodchuck, coyotes, opossums, skunks, and weasels can be hunted year round.

The exception is during regular firearms deer/bear seasons and before noon during spring turkey.

But you could still carry a handgun for deer/bear season.

The other restriction is it must be a manually operated pistol or rifle.
However, there is no restriction on caliber.

Get an LTCF and this won't be an issue. Just don't shoot anything with a semi-auto handgun.

    Hope this helps.

Please don't do that. If you have the urge to shoot something, go to a PGC shooting range and shoot up some paper targets. What you get out of shooting stumps is beyond me. Nothing good can happen from that.

If it is SGL or State Park, that will get you in trouble.......

Some people use SGLs for hiking or cross country skiing. Please don't shoot at stumps.

I'm sure that you think that you are very safe when practicing that activity, but it is dangerous and actually pretty inconsiderate to just walk around shooting stuff.

Perhaps not such a good idea.......

The Pennsylvania Game Commission owns and manages for
wildlife and people more than 1.4 million acres of State Game Lands
throughout the commonwealth. An additional several million acres
are enrolled in PGC public access programs. (Sportsmen are also
    welcome on 2,200,000 acres of state forests and selected state parks;
the 510,000-acre Allegheny National Forest; and several sizeable
federal properties administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service,
National Park Service and the Corps of Engineers.)
State game lands are public hunting grounds and lawful hunting
and trapping are permitted during open seasons. To enable the
Commission to effectively manage and protect these invaluable
land holdings for this and future generations of hunters, trappers
and wildlife enthusiasts, the following activities are prohibited:

Use game lands for any personal, organizational or commercial
purpose other than the intended use of the property
