    Default Is $400 for a NIB S&W 686 a good price?

I was perusing one of the local shops (sorry not going to say which) tonight and came across a NIB 4" Smith and Wesson 686 for $399.99. I have to ask, is that a good price for this gun? I'm not as up on wheelguns as I am autoloaders, but I thought that seemed like a rather nice price for such a nice-sized Smith & Wesson .357

I have been contemplating a "traditional equalizer" (admittedly something bigger than .357) for a while now and I was sorely tempted to buy it right then and there, but didn't. I always pictured myself getting one with a 6" barrel or longer to take better advantage of the magnum's potential. The price of this revolver seems really cheap to me, so maybe a lot of people have the same idea as me and want the 6"? Is a 4" barrel worth bothering with, considering that it would never be carried and just used for fun a range toy? Or is recoil likely to be much worse and accuracy diminished slightly?

    Thoughts?

That is an excellent price!!! Almost too good to be true.

I assume it is one w/ the lock, and not a NIB pre-lock model (which would be worth even more)?

Buds is showing this to be $550, and I was going to say even at $500 it would be a good deal.

The 686 is pretty stout as it is, so the 4" should be enough to handle the toughest loads. A 6" would be a little heavier, and have the longer sight radius. You have to determine how they both balance, and go for the one you like better.

What do you mean with a lock? Should I be looking for a keyhole on this gun?

No you should be buying this gun. Unless its a factory defect or it was used in a murder...buy it.

The 686 is an amazing handgun. I have a 6" and wouldn't trade it for the world! I just came across a mint Colt Series 80 1911 in a trade and would go strait up for the 4" 686 if you were interested. PM if interested!

Wow, so that's definitely a good price, huh? I sorta figured it was decent, but I thought I'd ask first. I reeeeeeally shouldn't be buying another gun as I am saving up for a Class III goodie, but this is such a good deal that it's kinda hard to pass up. I might go pick it up today, I'm not sure yet. If I don't get it, I'll announce what shop it is at, if someone else can snag it if they want it.

I don't know if the shop is selling it so low because they've had it forever and just want to get rid of it, or if the price was merely accidental. They are selling a NIB S&W 637 and 642 for $400 each as well too, which I guess is about the norm for the airweights.

What would you do? (I should probably make this into a poll)
Buy 4" S&W 686 for $400 right now using money from Class III fund?
Continue saving for class III weapon instead?

If you really want the gun and can give up a few class 3 bucks for now, get the revolver.

If you are going to pass, at least give the shop's info to someone in the market for a 686 at a good price.

FYI Cheesey: I paid $525 for mine. And that was BEFORE all the California taxes! (Which made it almost $600)

    Buy it.

WHY ARE YOU STILL READING THIS, GET IN YOUR CAR AND GO BUY IT!!!
