    Thats what I did with one of my golfball mortars

    With the civil war model the tube is fixed at a 45 deg angle and range is adjusted by changing your charge.

    most of the smaller mortars up to and including the civil war were fired that way.
    Here is a copy of a French and Indian war grenade mortar I made a while back it also is fixed at 45 deg.

    So the cannons aren't able to move on that pivot point?

    That would explain it now wouldn't it ..

    Period correct small mortars used by the military for combat were fixed elevation. The green golf ball one I made is based on a Coast Guard Life Saving Gun that were used to launch ropes to ships off shore. Those did have elevation adjustments.
