scout mounts makes a replacement for the rear sight on AKs that leaves you with a fixed notch for irons but gives you a rock solid picatinny base for an optic as well, I had one on my SKS, it was killer.

Why not simply use a lasermax with a barrel mount? You can't use a scope right on this thing, it's too heavy to accurately hold out and fire with reasonable accuracy, from the hip with a laser might be your best shot.

This was my first thought, but there really isn't any room on the barrel for a mount.
The area between the handguard retainer and the Fsb is interfered with by the gas tube, and there is no barrel protruding beyond the Fsb, just a threaded stub.

Its actually very easy to shoot using a sling, the sights are just really hard to acquire. The gun itself is reasonably accurate as well.
