    Talking New shotgun

Well to me it is anyway, I just got a New Haven 295 bolt action 12ga for covering a guys shift on New Years Eve. I cross referenced the number and it's a Mossberg 195d. The stock looks good, it needs a mag and the red "fire" dot under the safety selector. Is there any kind of information you guys can give me about this piece of equipment? How do I remove the bolt? I don't see any kind of release for it. It has a full choke but I was wondering if there are others available besides an improved cylinder? When I was looking on the web I found a couple of places that carried mags and chokes, but they only showed the full and improved cylinder and I was hoping to find a rifled. Any info would be great (like production dates, how hard is it to mount a scope, and/or problems, etc.) would be greatly appreciated

I just saw they were made from 1955-1958

    Model 195D Bolt Action Repeater
3-Shot, Takedown, 12 gauge only (2 3/4-inch), 2 shell detachable magazine. Weight 6 3/4 lbs, barrel, 28" with two interchangeable choke tubes, Full & Improved Cylinder. Genuine American walnut Monte Carlo stock with rubber recoil pad. Made 1955-1958.

I guess I'll get the few things this gun is missing to bring it back to original(mag, F button, I/C choke and choke wrench) and I might add a better recoil pad(slip over). I'll try and post pics of it tomorrow.

Ok, you gotta pull the trigger to remove the bolt. So no one has ever had or handled one or even had a Parent/Grandparent that had one? Here are some pics. The third one shows the missing red F button.

I generally try Gunbroker for Mossberg parts, also Numrich. Had decent luck so far. I had a similar bolt action shotty, but it was a Sears/JC Higgins that was apparently made by H&R. Mine is an open-bore deer shotty.

Yeah, I ordered the parts from Numrich and I'm just waiting for them to arrive so I can try it out. If it works fine with no problems I think I might take it apart and refinish the stock, barrel, and bolt. That'll give me something to do in my spare time while its cold out. Any suggestions on commercially available products for doing such a task? I've done a bunch of automotive body work so it should'nt be that far of a stretch for me to do it instead of paying somebody else to do it. If it were a high dollar or rare gun I would definitely not be trying to do it myself.

    Just saw the thread.

I began hunting with a 20 ga 185 Mossberg way back when. My father still has it and hunts with it on occasion. He purchased it in 1959.

Over the years I have aquired two 16 gauges, a 20 and .410. I've owned a 12 ga. but sold it. I also have a JC Higgins 16 ga bolt gun.

An uncle had a 20 ga. with the interchangable chokes.

With exception of my .410, each of mine have the C-lect choke.

I still enjoy hunting with them and make it a point each year to take them out after squirrel.

Not long ago, a person could find them for $60 - $80 quite frequently. Occasionally I see them for that price, but I also see many well above $100.

Good Luck with it and enjoy!

Well I got the parts so now I'm just waiting to see when I can go test fire it. I'd still like to hear some recommendations for refinishing products too.

For a working shotgun to be used in the field, I find Tru-Oil to be good. It contains a property that seals the wood from moisture very nicely. It is also easy to apply and work with.

When I need to apply stain, I use Behlens Solar-Lux stains. They can be found at Woodcraft. Behlens is an alcohol based stain. Therefore, it does not raise the grain.
